Why is it in that particular orientation? Let's look at “short-hand” first . Shorthand is a system of rapid handwriting that transcribes the spoken word. So you might think to decipher the figure into something meaningful – but alas, there is none.

So, what else can short-hand mean? How about looking at a clock face? What is the hand that refers to the hour called? It can be either “hour hand” or “ short hand”.

If this is so, then when it sweeps out a right angle we have the clue to look for a period that fits the description. A period of 3 hours sweeps out a right angle –referring to the short hand.
